EKPHRASTIC POETRY WORKSHOP with HEIDI GRECO
Date: April 13 2019
Place: Turnbull Gallery, South Surrey Rec & Arts Centre
The word ‘ekphrasis’ comes from the Greek, and means description or interpretation, though one of the goals of this workshop is to help you take your writing beyond mere description.
Some of this year’s Double Exposure themes (close-ups/macro shots and found text, such as the visuals presented by traffic signs) may present writers with a new set of interpretive challenges. Join Surrey poet Heidi Greco in a hands-on workshop that will help you come up with artful ways of expressing your reactions to the images in the gallery.
Participating writers will have the opportunity to sign up to read at Double Exposure’s celebratory closing event on Thursday evening, April 18th. Event details here.
The workshop is free and open to anyone interested in trying out new approaches to writing – no registration required, no experience necessary. Just bring something to write with, whether pen and paper or device, along with a willingness to try new things.
And no, you won’t be restricted to only writing poems – you’ll be encouraged to follow your imagination to wherever the photos take you, and to write in whatever genre you prefer.
This workshop leader is widely published, and has been a featured performer at writers’ festivals. She’s also led workshops in schools and community centres, and was an annual presenter for SFU’s Southbank Creative Writing Program.
