A public meeting is being held on a proposed Performing Arts Centre and Contemporary Arts Cafe & Gallery. The new centre, proposed as part of a residential tower development planned for 152nd Street at 19th Ave, may be able to help create a cultural hub in South Surrey. The public meeting is a drop-in format and will last from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Tuesday October 22nd at the Rotary Field House, 14600 Rotary way. International Artist Day is back and White Rock is hosting this celebration to honour artists. With so many talented individuals and so much to do, International Artist day has turned into a week long celebration that will showcase visual and performing arts! The festival is a community event and everyone is welcome — this is a chance to meet and get to know the creative talent in our own backyard. Our Paint the Town event, part of the Celebration of Canada Culture Day, offers the public a chance to watch artists at work and artists a chance to network and meet. The event features many local artists painting en plein air at various locations around White Rock.  En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif (“painting on the ground”) in French. The City of White Rock in partnership with Semiahmoo Arts  is currently accepting submissions to our Art Student Exhibition as part of our Art on Display program.  All art students (over 18 years of age) are invited to submit a maximum of two works of art.  The intent of this exhibition is to enable emerging artists to gain exposure and for it to be a celebration of their work. Semiahmoo Arts is really pleased to be working with the White Rock Museum & Archives to present Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Transformative Power of Craft. The exhibit works with the theme of “10,000 Hours Invested: Craft– Past and Present.” Part of the Inaugural Fall Festival of the Arts in White Rock, the display is on for more than a month, giving community members of all ages a chance to see a wide variety of art completed by 15 different artists. Semiahmoo Arts would like to thank Mary Ann Smith for all her hard work in supporting the Arts Council. Mary Ann has recently stepped down from her position as Executive Director to pursue other opportunities. She is a dedicated and hard working supporter of the arts and the Arts Council. Her experience, humour and passion have been invaluable to us. We would like to wish Mary Ann all the best in all that the future holds in store for her.
