Through her various loom handwoven, crocheted, knitted and embroidered pieces, Textile Artist Gloria Villamil explores her love of vibrant colours and patterns as well as geometric and organic shapes. She is Creative Director of the handcrafted and unique brand Pattygloria By Design.
Gloria values the handmade quality of textile arts and how this medium conveys feelings of warmth, comfort, joy and connectedness in our highly individualized urban communities. She draws inspiration from her surroundings and the rich heritage of traditional South American textile techniques she learned from authentic indigenous crafters while growing up in Colombia.
Gloria has exhibited both in Alberta and British Columbia. In 2007, her handwoven tapestry Transicion won the award for Most Iconic Artwork at the Stollery Gallery in Edmonton. As an active member of Semiahmoo Arts, she recently exhibited crocheted artwork at the Turnbull Art Gallery. She is currently working on a collaborative tapestry piece with Danish artist Stine Leth, which will be hung in the Aarhus Airport, Denmark in the second semester of 2017. Gloria holds a BFA in Textile Design, a Masters in Textiles and an MBA. She lives near South Surrey, BC.
During the 2017 Semiahmoo Arts Fibre Arts celebration, Gloria will exhibit several contemporary textile artworks at the Pop Up Store in Whiter Rock, including one of a kind crocheted wearable items, wallhangings, and handwoven tapestry pieces. At the same time, she is the Installation Coordinator for the ‘Yarn Bombing’ at the South Surrey Recreational Center.
